Zoe The Golden Zebra
By: Emily H

Age: 10
Atlanta, GA USA
Picture

Meet Zoe, a rare golden zebra. She is one of the rarest zebras in existence. Sometimes called a "white" zebra, Zoe isn't an albino. She has amelanosis, a pigmentation abnormality. She is lacking in color pigments called melanins. Her stripes are a light beige instead of black. She has lovely blue eyes but has poor night vision. Zoe would have trouble surviving in the wild like most zebras because of her stripe color. Zebra's biggest predator is the lion. Lions are normally color-blind and wouldn't be able to pick out one individual zebra in a herd. But a golden zebra would stand out from the rest of the herd, leaving themselves easy prey for the lion. Golden zebras would only survive a few days in the wild. Sadly she died at the age of 19 in August 2017.
